Week 5: Autumn point-to-point season

05/11/2017 Tinahely  (yielding)

4yo maiden:

Rocco (Colin Bowe) by Shantou F- (R92)

£90,000 Cheltenham November 2017; 12th foal; half-brother to bumper/useful 2m-2m5f hurdle/chase winner Line Ball for Christy Roche, 2m7f-3m hurdle/chase winner Smart Exit (rated 104 for Renee Robeson) and dual bumper winner Sin Bin (very frustrating type for Paul Nicholls); dam unraced half-sister to high-class hurdler Mighty Mogul.

Rocco scored well here and was given a decent rating of 92. Nicely related to Line Ball he took advantage of a rival’s spill two fences out to win by five lengths. Rocco has joined Nigel Twiston-Davies and has already run sixth in a pre-Christmas bumper and although second on his hurdling debut was 27L behind the winner. He had been unlucky at Curraghmore earlier in the year and represented Colin Bowe’s third individual 4yo maiden winner already this season.

5yo maiden:

Upsettheodds (Denis Murphy) by Oscar 4-5 (R87)

A weak contest run at a steady pace Upsettheodds a price tag of £15,000 suggests he has no great pretensions to excelling at the game. A cheap buy he will not be starring at any future sale.

It may be fair to imply that we don’t believe we witnessed the future Gold Cup winner here. To indicate how low expectations can be is evidenced by the fact that Donald McCain subsequently picked up Upsettheodds for just £15,000, almost a bet to nothing in recent times for a point-to-point maiden winner. From a family with plenty of winners the winning point dam is a half-sister to three winners so this gives Upsettheodds a chance of track success.
